ALL TIME HIGH!

The local stock market advanced to a new record high on Tuesday as investors gobbled up blue-chip stocks on expectations of firm 1Q12 corporate earnings and sustained economic growth for this year.

The PSEi main index rose 39.82 points, or 0.8% higher from Monday, to close at 5,157.28, an historic high. The index jumped to an intra-day high of 5,186.52, up 1.3% for the day, before settling down to a lower level.

BARGAIN HUNTING...

Bargain-hunters trooped back to the market on this week after investors were partly encouraged by the stable 4Q11 GDP numbers released and by attractive stock prices after the choppy market movement over the past six sessions.  Sectoral averages were mostly higher led by Property and Holding firms while Services average posted a slight decline.

The country’s coal industry produced some 7.6 million metric tons last year, up 21% from the 6.3m MT produced in 2010, on the back strong demand from local power firms and the cement industry, and for export to China and Thailand. However, despite the increase in local production, coal imports are still larger. Cautious trading lifted share prices slightly higher as investors reduced property shares in favor of industrial and power-related stocks. The benchmark PSEi index rose 6.28 points, or 0.14% higher from Monday, to close at 4,282.62 on moderate trading volume.

Lower than expected GDP growth in the third quarter pulled local share prices lower on Tuesday, its ninth in the last ten trading sessions, as investors reduced holdings and took profits from select blue-chip gainers. BREAKING RESISTANCE FOR CHRISTMAS...

A recent surge in global equity markets pushed local share prices higher on Monday, sending the main index above a key resistance level once again. The PSEi benchmark index rose 34.48 points, or 0.83% higher from Friday, to close at 4,201.08 on increased trading volume. Once again, the PSE index rises sluggishly with a flat 0.35% increase, proof of the continued caution exercised by the market. NICKEL ASIA CORP (NAC) UNDER SIEGE!

Nickel Asia Corp. (NIKL) said that it is suspending its mining operations and nickel ore loading activities at its Taganito Mine Corp. subsidiary in Claver, Surigao del Norte after it was “occupied” by an armed group of men. Pieces of mining equipment were reported burned and destroyed.

The Philippine market returned to action a day after being forced to suspend trading Tuesday on inclement weather spewing optimism right off the opening bell, racking up gains of as much as 216.03 points or 5.8% inside the first half-hour.
